International Adoption

The landscape of international adoption has changed dramatically in the last ten years. While more than ten million children live in orphanages worldwide, the many families who would be interested in adopting them can face a long, daunting and expensive process while trying to bring them home.

A variety of countries open and close to possibility of adoption throughout the years. As of this writing, the most common countries to adopt from are: China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

You can read about each country’s detailed adoptions requirements, as well as any notices or alerts about specific countries, here. And if you are looking for a great overview on what to expect when adopting internationally, check out the U.S. Department of State’s “From A-Z” guidebook, which details out much of what you will need to know when embarking on international adoption.

Perhaps one of the best summaries of the current state of international adoption is reflected in the absorbing documentary Stuck, now available on Netflix, iTunes and on the website of Both Ends Burning, the producer of the film. Here is the trailer:
